A calanque is a geological formation partly submerged by the sea that can be found around the Mediterranean. The sea, exploiting the geological faults in the calcareous rock, has progressively carved the landscape, offering the magnificent panorama cuts and a characteristic ecosystem. Formed 120 million years ago, the Calanques massif extends over 20 km long between Les Goudes and Cassis. Many hikers venture out on the trails surrounded by winding hills. The creeks have the particularity of having formed the famous "pierre de cassis", an Urgonian calcareous rock varying from beige to ochre, renowned throughout the world. It was used for the construction of major ports such as Alexandria, Algiers or Marseille. Today this noble limestone has become a decorative object. The Massif of the Calanques also has the particularity of being a natural freshwater basin, its azure blue water is sublime.

Access to the park is regulated by prefectoral decree and remains open until 30 September. Provide water (1 to 2 litres per person) as the atmosphere is particularly dry. Bring good walking shoes, good sun protection, a cap, a compass. Ask for an IGN card at the tourist office, otherwise it is easy to get lost.
